Hello i brought this acer 'red falcon' from gardeners world this year, however its been looking very sorry for itself. it was in sun in the summer and might of got scorched but then i moved to half shade but its never recovered and looks terrible. Leaves are dropping off and brown on edges and curling up. Its in a pot with multi purpose compost. Was this right? or should i of planted it in ericaceous compost?
    thanks

Ericaceous compost would have been best so re pot using that. The leaves will naturally falling now so don;t worry too much. The scorching won;t have helped but I doubt you have anything terminal. Re pot and keep out of strong sunlight and winds next year

Acers will be fine in multi purpose compost. I pot mine in a mix of multi purpose and ericaceous 50/50. I would suggest giving it some ericaceous fertiliser in spring. They don't like to be overfed, so I'd suggest adding some ericaceous slow release fertiliser which will last the season. I use this one:

They like some sun but not too strong, so an east facing position would be good.
