When are my potatoes ready!

    I have grown Charlotte pots in old compost bags and they have just started to flower - does that mean they are ready cos I dont want to split the bag if theyre not :confused:

    I would leave them a bit longer yet. If you want max crop wait untill the tops start to die before you lift them.Better to have a shuffle through the bag in two weeks try not to disturb it to much and when the potatoes are the size you want them get them out.If you do go for a shuffle through remember to cover the potatoes when you are finished (if not big enough) because they turn green where the sun can get at them.

    most of our spuds are flowering too marge and as Beefy says leave them until the flowers die back.keep watering now though.(i heard Mont Don say)i was wading through ours this morning to do so as water pressures not great at allotment,giant nettles,thistles etc...... [​IMG]

    I am growing some pentland javelin and have dug up a few today to see if they are ready. Some are lovely little white potatoes and some are purple - why is that. The purple ones just disintegrate when cooked. Does this mean I have dug up too late or too early?
