This is the first time I have tried growing sweetcorn and I have a dozen plants which all have cob's on them but how do I know when they are ready to pick.I read somewhere you need to stick a pin in and see what colour the liquid is would that be correct if so what colour should it be.The tassels are light brown in colour.

Usually ready when the tassles are brown.

Real test of ripeness is when you come out in the morning and find the stalks battered to the ground by the Badgers as they have the lot overnight

The end of the tassels go a dark brown when the corn is ready. With regard to sticking a pin into one of the corns, you can just as easily use your thumbnail, the colour you are looking for is a milky white

Open up a cob and look, then do the taste test by biting into one and if it tastes sweet it is ready. Normally you don't have to do that, if the individual kernels look plump and ripe, they probably are.

I think mine went from ripe to over ripe in about two weeks.
Dug them all out today complete with cobs, even the birds wont eat them.
