when can i cut back my clematis

    when can i cut back my clematis I have noticed buds forming but wondered if this is still a bit early to cut them back, I live in yorkshire.

    I usually cut mine back in March.

    i have all 3 groups but in this instance group 2 and 3

    Group 2s don't need much pruning unless you want to rejuvenate them, or they're spreading beyond where you want them. You can tidy them after flowering and you'll get more flowers later on - sometimes singles if it's double flowered type. The Group 3s can be pruned late winter if necessary, and even if they get a little bit of damage later, you can tidy that up. It'll depend whereabouts you are though, and what your climate is like. Good luck with them though

      Clematis pruning was definitely a February job in Northants :) If they were left until March, I risked damaging the new growth. Much easier to prune and tie them in to supports when the buds are just showing.
