We've nearly finished clearing all the weeds away from our new garden. Just wanted to get some advice on what to grow and when. I have bought some bulbs (alliums and tulips) - am I right in thinking it's too early to plant the tulips?

I also want to buy a few shrubs. When is the best time to plant decidious shrubs (such as Cotinus Grace) and evergreen shrubs (considering a berberis possibly). Can they be planted along with any new herbaceous perennials now, or is it better to wait until spring?

    Thanks

    Hi Kai

I'm waiting to put my Spring bulbs in but mainly because the ground is so dry and rock hard at the moment. I *think* I'm right in saying that Spring bulbs can be planted from September onwards (although I'm quite sure someone will be quick to correct me if I am wrong :heehee: )

As for the shrubs, it is my understanding that if they have been grown in pots, they can be planted most of the year.

Hi Kai :) , bulbs are now readily available and can be planted between now and November, although they're best planted as soon as you buy them. Traditionally tulip bulbs are planted in November.

As for shrubs and perennials September is a great time to plant them, the soil is still warm and they will establish roots without putting on any top growth and then get away well in the spring. If you're planting any tall shrubs in an exposed spot then be prepared to perhaps stake them to protect against wind rock until they're established.

As Mum says anything bought in pots can be potentially be planted at anytime of the year, but the best time for me is March to October, always avoid trying to plant in frosty or waterlogged conditions and if you plant during warm dry weather keep them well watered.

    Good luck and have fun....:dbgrtmb:
