I have a flower bed which has been overrun with Verbena Bonariensis, Alchemilla Mollis, Physostegia, and Persicaria. It’s also very damp at the best of times but virtually waterlogged this year. In this bed, I have a number of Iris and Agapanthus which are doing well but I think would be happier elsewhere.

I’d like to lift all of the plants and clean up the whole border but the only plants I’m concerned about surviving are the Iris and Agapanthus. When would you recommend is the best time to lift them?

    TIA

If they're tall bearded Iris, now is the time to lift and divide them.
The rhizomes need to be baked in the summer sun to flower well the following year - if we get any sun that is.. so ensure the rhizomes face where they will get most sun.

    I don't know about agapanthus.

I have found it best to wait for the agapanthus flowers to finish, before I leave it a couple of weeks, then lift. I've only ever done this in order to divide the plant, and found the parts take a full year of recover, before they flower the second year.
I suspect that if you are careful, and transplant the entire plant, then they'll probably flower the very next year.
But wait until all the flowers have finished.

I can't advise on the irises.

Thank you, you’ve covered off both plants So it looks like I shouldn’t do the whole bed at the same time as the agapanthus in this bed are quite late flowering.
