I planted basil outside once. I chose it a nice warm sheltered spot, but it was still gone within days. The slugs and snails had it.

Personally I wouldn't put it outside. It's too vulnerable. Its a bit of a wimp really. If you do though, I'd wait til the back end of May.

Thanks clueless I never usually have any problem with growing basil outside during summer months but then I planted seeds early this year just to see if they would grow...

There are some types of Basil that grow better than others outside, but I've forgotten which varities are more hardy, so just keep a continous stream of pots coming indoors from greenhouse/polytunnel.

usually basil die at 10c , so it`s really delicate , but if you want to grow outdoor , try at the end of May/june ...but it`s alway better to grow indoor or in the greenhouse .
Greek basil seams to be really easy , but for sweet and best taste try lettuce leaf basils, i.e. Valentino, Mammoth, and Napolitano......for curiosity try the black basil (need warm).

I grow several pots. One in the kitchen, on hand for the Chef to use :) the rest "recovering" in the greenhouse. If it gets out of hand just cut it back. I agree with others that it is a wimp and won't like being outside, particularly at this time of year.

Putting outside on nice days (little/no wind, temperature 10C+) will slow it down, compared to being indoors.
