I have a Euonymus Red Cascade which must be about 30 years old now. It is very slow growing, here anyway, and it is now the size of a small tree. I like it very much for the brilliant display every autumn when it goes wonderful shades of red and orange.
Every year for about the last 5 I have meant to get round to pruning it as it is now taller than I would like and hides some very very nice Rhodendrons unless you walk up the path to view them.
It has now started into growth ( not far) but obviously the sap has risen. I wonder if I am too late to give it a fairly major prune removing maybe about 6 ft off the major branches. I don’t know if the not insignificant cuts would bleed? It is not a must to prune it now if it is better to leave it till winter, just do not want to loose it by doing something quite drastic at the wrong time. I can always walk up the path to see the Rhododendrons flowering.:)

You had me going there for a bit but on looking it up its probably a variety of the spindle bush, its pretty common around here in hedgerows and they plant it along motorway banks where it glows every autumn.

I think you could prune now without any real damage although you will probably not see those fantastically coloured seeds at the end of the summer.

Just prune one branch and see if it bleeds?

Good idea Pete to just prune a branch and wait to see what happens. I will go out armed with the loppers tomorrow, thanks.
