What is everyones views on pruning or dead heading hydrangea .

I always take the old heads off and give a good prune in Spring.

Interested in what others do.This also applies to floribunda roses.

    Thankyou

Do Hydrangeas flower on new wood or old wood?

They will flower on new wood but only at the very end of the season, I aim to take out around 1/3- 2-3 of old growth and a proportion in hieght usually 2/3 but depending on the situation

Thanks, PG. The end of the season will do fine. I was always told to leave the old heads on until Spring to protect the new buds. This isn't my garden, so as long as they flower, somewhene' everybody will be happy [IMG]

That has always been my understanding
Surely if you prune in autumn you will lose the flowers for the following year?

I do what you do Scotcat and take the heads off in spring and give it a prune. My neighbour pruned one of my hydrangeas last Autumn so she could replace and paint the fence and it didn't flower at all this year.
