When do you all start your Cannas after the winter?

I had my first Canna late last year and loved it. I managed to get it to flower...awesome plants.

Its currently in a 'safe house' :lolpoint: waiting for spring.

    Thankyou!

Hello Sixpence , if you mean when do you need to start your last years Canna from the rhizomes / bulbs ? Mine are in a cold garage now and I hope to start them in early March. Now I have never done this before so if you watch the Canna thread in this section , hopefully someone will give us a few tips :dbgrtmb:

This is only my second year with Canna's so I'm no expert, but I am planning to spark them into life mid-March, I have the benefit of a greenhouse so can give them protection against late frosts. I aim to get mine planted out mid May.

So it depends on your location, last frost date and whether you can get them started earlier SiXpence

        Thankyou JWK and Harry,

Yes this is last years and I can't wait to get it planted again.

I bought it quite late on and got a flower, it got quite tall too. If I can get an early start this year it may just clear the six foot fence...:loll::loll:

That would leave neighbours wondering what the heck is that?:heehee:

I wouldn't rush in getting it into growth unless you have a good bit of greenhouse space available.
Starting them into growth is reasonably easy, just a rise in temperature with increasing amounts of water.

The problems occur if it gets too big and there is still frost or very low night temperatures so you cant plant them out.

          Thanks Pete,

It can stay in the shed a while yet, no heat.

pete; my Cannas shrugged off the first few mild frosts at the start of the winter, but I'm guessing the soft new growth in the spring will be very vunerable?

I read somewhere that the soil needs to hit about 19°c to start them off - is this correct?

I'm not sure 19C is correct, never used a thermometer, but April in the greenhouse is usually the month things start to really move.
Its one of those transitional months, when you start and its still cool, but by the end its really warm, especially by day.
But still too early to plant out.

I've already started some of mine off. I get bit of a 'production line' going - pot them up and put them on the heat mat at around 22C until new shoots appear then move them off to make room for the next lot!

Nice one guys - joined a few minutes ago, and feel like I've learned something already! Follow the same sort of practice with bananas at home, but not Canna before. Maybe this ought to be the year I start...
