Hi all I'm in need of your help again. As I've demonstrated before with the Fat Hen :D I am a complete beginner at growing veg so please be patient with me.
On the 5th May I sowed outside in my raised beds Spring Onions (White Lisbon) & Onion's (red baron), todate I can't see any of them germinating. The spring onions say to harvest in 6-8 weeks so I guess they've had it & before I sow again can anyone suggest what might have gone wrong. :(

    Thanks Martin

The likliest answer Martin, is that they were probably sown too deep.:thumb:

Wow David I didn't realise how precise I need to be when sowing, they went in about 1/4 - 1/2 inch deep the same as everything else, what should I have done?

Not sure but I have virtually lost a row of beetroot to slugs.

Could it be that the shoots were just eaten off as they emerged.

Could be that they have been to dry to germinate due to lack of rain ?.

It's only rained up here once in the last month and the top inch of soil is bone dry.

I don't think so pete, there are other veg in the same bed, Radishes doing really well and two tyes of carrot which are slowly coming through & no sign of slugs, I do have copper tape around the boxes which seems to work really well.

Vegmandan if only it could be that, we have had bucket loads of rain here and I've watered in between( too much maybe?). By the way Sorry If we seemed to get of on the wrong foot, I am grateful for all advice given and I accept that it must be frustrating trying to help someone like me who has absolutely no idea, but I am keen and with all your help I will eat something I've grown oneday. (hopefully It won't kill me).:D:D
    Thanks Martin

Martin, going by your reply to my post, they certainlt weren`t sown too deep. So is there any sign of mice in the area?:)

They would probably eat the seed. why not scrape some of the soil away, and see if the seeds are still there?

David,........have you ever tried to find onion seed after you have sown it.:D
Mice only like onions with a nice bit of cheddar cheese.

I reckon the only answer is the seed was old stock, not something unheard of with our dodgy seed people.

I'd just have another go with some more seed.

You've got me worried now because I've just sown another two rows of spring onions this afternoon using the same seed packet , should I bin them and go get some fresh seeds?

Who knows, just buy another packet, and if nothing shows in a week, try again.
