    Just where are the worms?

About thirty years ago when digging a veg plot before I gave it all up
every spade full had about eight worms like six inch nails long and thick

The space has now been down to a meadow (I will not call it a lawn) for those 30 years

The latest project consisted of breaking up a concrete base, and the soil beneath contained about 200 bumble bees, double digged and only one small worm ever found, including in the compost cubic metre bin (I had to chuck the grass cuttings somewhere)

I was going to go this weekend to the forest with a spade and go worm finding to transport to my garden

Any worm charmers out there ?

I've also noticed few worms in my garden.. but I used to dig in school when I was about 5 lol and there used to be them huge ones! (or my hands were tiny)

It could be down to the dry spring we've had Jack. The soil has been so dry they've probably gone deep to find moisture. I've noticed a lack of slugs and snails too, even with the recent rain.

It has been really dry for worms this year, they must have gone down deep. You can see it when you watch the poor old blackbirds! Also, there would have been more activity in a veg garden with all that nice organic matter!
Hope your 200 bumble bees escaped unharmed....we need as many of those as possible tto!

I don't see all that many worms either. But if I leave a few bits of leaf or stems lying around from dead-heading, it doesn't take long before something starts dragging them underground. So they must be there somewhere.

      Bumblebees

They must be resident but quiet

They still are out everyday at what little flowers I have, and seem to settle in the lawn (meadow) and under the greenhouse again, but do not bother anyone
