I just had a Magnolia tree delivered from Garden News and wondered what were the best conditions to plant it. I have two spaces in the garden where it can be planted, either sheltered and sunny but near the house, or in semi shade with a bit of a wind tunnel coming up the path to it.

They definitely do not like windy positions.

Thanks Palustris. I'll have to find something that will cope with the windy area.

I could always keep the magnolia small and put it in a large pot. Then I could move it about a bit and have it on the patio at the top of the garden in the summer. It's nice and sheltered there.
