    Hi all.

I sowed a load of lawn seed about 10 days ago. Still no sign of any grass appearing though. My dad reckons I did it too early for our area.

Will I need to do it again or should I be a bit more patient?

    more patient [IMG]

Soil is cold, so germination will take a while ... stop worrying about it and you'll find it has germinated (like a watched-pot never boiling :) )

I made the mistake last year of allowing Nasturtiums to spill over in a huge "pile" on either side of the entrance to my lawn. When I eventually pulled up the Nasties the grass underneath had disappeared. That and the fact that I was using the reduced area of the entrance quite often didn't do the rest of the grass any good.:cry3:

So now, after this hard winter, I've got a patch of bare earth 6' x 3' where my grassed entrance used to be, and you couldn't exactly use the rest of the lawn as a bowling green either. So this week I'm going to rake the lawn and the bare patch and seed the lot. Then the battle is to resist the temptation of walking through the entrance onto the lawn while, hopefully, the grass grows back.

    Too early, I think, Clueless.
But grass is tough stuff - try stopping it.
Wait til the weather warms up a bit and it will pop up. You'll see.

Grass takes a couple of weeks to germinate even at the best of times. A little patience clueless1 :dbgrtmb:

I guess I am being impatient.

The back garden is north facing too, so it will no doubt take a little bit longer. Although existing plants and weeds have started to grown, the new batch of weeds don't appear to have arrived yet, whereas in the front garden (south facing and sheltered), new weeds have been appearing for a couple of weeks now.

In view of this, I might re-dig the lawn area anyway, and re-seed in a couple of weeks. Purely because the lawn area I've prepared was a bit of a rush job so is a long way from perfect.

    ARMANDII,

for an area 6' x 3' it is not worth all the effort seeding it. Two rolls of turf should do the job. I bought some last year from Homebase at about £3 per roll. :dbgrtmb:

Hmmm ... an area of the lawn I re-turfed two years ago is still clearly visible as being "different" to the rest of the lawn. Whereas areas that I have reseeded have blended in such that they are no longer noticeable. Might depends what sort of grass was there originally I suppose - in my case it might be the quantity of weeds in the seeded area that make it look the same as the rest of the lawn!

Also using turf you have a bit more work in to do getting the levels right, skimming off the old bare soil :dbgrtmb:

    Tangential, but!

I read of someone growing some "lawn" in seed trays - so that if a bit of the lawn became damaged they could replace it like-for-like with same grass type (would need to include same-weeds and same-moss in my case!)

    I'll get my coat ...

When I replaced some of my worn patches with turf it blended in after one season. My normal programme of neglect saw to that. :heehee:
