Early this spring I overseeded my lawns with good results so far.

Firstly I used a sacrifier to remove the thatch etc and creating grooves in soil surface for new seeds etc.
Made my own compost roller spreader using universal compost. Scattered the new lawn seeds, used the roller spreading the compost and then used a board approx 4ft wide with a broom handle attached to level the surface and bring the existing grass blades up through.

As said, I'm very pleased with the results from early spring.

Now I want to start collecting bags and store in garage ready the autumn's overseeding.

Do I use the same universal compost (recently read this could dry out quick), will have to wait and see how it performs in the coming warm months. Thought if I should use Topsoil/JI No3 or universal compost for winter.

I used bought topsoil @welshone which was recommended to me in my local garden centre. It worked well at retaining moisture and the lawn seed germinated in eight days. I was advised not to use multipurpose compost or lawn dressing.

      Thanks,
Thats what I've read since using it, universal/multipurpose tends to dry out quicker. But at the moment it looks ok,

I’ve used multipurpose compost in the past @welshone and it was fine but it needed regular watering as it dried out quickly and cracked in hot weather. It was also a while ago when compost contained peat, peat free may be more problematic!

Early spring I used compost with added peat. Lawn currently looking good despite dryish conditions. Probably wait till August which to use for Autumn dressing etc.
Found with garden centre Top Soil dries out more so than the compost I use, also some say to use JI No3 which I find holds too much moisture over winter encouraging moss.
Probably take the risk and look for some good used Topsoil. ♂️

Trial and error helps @welshone. :) Use whatever suits your conditions best, grass seed is not very demanding, it's the lawn care afterwards that can be a struggle!
