    Hi

Which economical fertiliser do you use before the growing season to give new plants a good start? I'm currently using a liquid seaweed concentrate from Wilko's.

I'm wary of using blood, fish and bone because of the local cat and fox population.

    Thank you.

I understand your concerns cucumber......here foxes will dig when I apply fish blood and bone esp in the open front garden. The same with chicken pellets. A thick mulch however seems to overcome the problem and works for me. :)

If you can, an organic fertiliser is best. It "feeds" the soil, or the bacteria etc in it and helps constitute a better one to grow in. Try seaweed meal. It is an excellent fertiliser. Living near the sea, I have used tons of raw seaweed here. So, that's my recommendation cucumber.

Artificial fertilisers like growmore will provide a balanced fertiliser but my feeling is it is harmful to creatures in the soil....it is highly caustic and adds nothing to the soil itself:sad:

I use BF&B most years, and apart from just the odd bit of digging from foxes I've not found cats to be that bothered.
Most of the organic ones are slow reacting.
So to my mind best added early in the growing season.

So for a boost around now I tend to use tomorite on fruiting/flowering plants, but mainly pot grown ones.
Everything else is expected to get on with it.

We use tomato food on pots and baskets and home made compost (with some horse manure dug into it) on the rest of the garden.
