Hi, I want to buy my brother an electric scarifier.

Would prefer a rear collection box (so that he can use it without it).

    Large(ish) flat lawn.

I've seen a number online such as Draper, Bosch, Makita, Alko etc etc.

Not too bothered about the "aerator" function - although any reviews greatly welcome.

Smallish budget - up to £150.

    Thanks,

    Silver Fox

Do you mean a raker, which rakes out the thatch and moss, or a scarifier which will also cut into the soil. I use a John Deere and also a little raker. The little raker is a lot slower as it has less bite. The bag on the John Deere is larger - as it needs to be. The raker is good for getting around awkward shapes and corners and for the edges.

    The John Deere has blades.

There is an Alko which has interchangeable cartridges which looks a good compromise.

The John Deere has the better build and probably the higher capacity motor

I use both without the bag and then use the lawn mower on high to collect the debris.

I have a Bosch one - I thinks its brillaint.

I got it about a year ago and the first time I used it on my lawn, I got 5 bags full of dead material.

Made the lawn look really tidy all through the winter.

I did it again this year and only got 2 - 3 bags so there was obviously a lot of old dead material there.

It just collects so much, fills the box (rear) in no time. The box can be split in two and stored within itself to save room.

Iceni - does your Bosch scarifier just get the dead thatch out, or will it also yank out moss?

    Hi Clare

It pulled the moss out too - it has 5 height settings I think, but I only used it on 2 or 3 (1 being the lowest).

The moss was on a lawn on the shaded side of the house and didn't seem to grow that deep (I'm not much of an expert on moss).

Anyway it took it all out (left rather large patches of bare earthh) Ok now though now re-seeded.

    Hope that helps

    Andy
