    Hi,

I'm looking to view a property that I like for my first home. It has a large long garden and has plenty of potential for me to make it my stamp on it. I've grown up in a house with a tiny concrete garden so the potential to have my own nice garden is a major factor. I spoke to the estate agent and he told me the garden is West facing but I've looked on Google maps and it looks south facing to me?
Can you confirm that I'm getting this right.
The house is facing north on Google maps so the garden is garden facing?
It's the end terrace house right of the Google red tag.

    Thanks

    Adam

Adam, if the white square to the right of the red flag is the house, then the garden would be South facing. The front of the house is in shadow and is North facing (sun blocked by the house itself). In the photo, the shadow in the neighbours garden to the left, is coming from the left (West).

You can download free compass apps for your smart phone and use that whe you are there. That's what I did, but I would say you are right.

Estate agents are curious beasts. One of the guys who showed us around a property couldn't answer one single question (it was his first day, bless him) :heehee:

If the house is facing north on ol' Googlemaps, then the garden's pretty much south-facing, I'd say! Google are pretty particular about that, haha. South facing gardens are lovely for the sunshine!

Thanks for your replies. I just went to the house and pulled my phone out to double double check that it is a south facing garden. Which it is.. so bring on the sun!
Estate agents hey!! He even went on to try justify that west facing gardens are the best for coming home from work with sun, bbq etc... 'west is the best' I believe he said. Imagine selling something for hundreds of thousands and not knowing a key element of what your selling.
Thanks again and keep an eye out for more post from me as I take my first adventure into gardening!!

Although the garden is south facing the estate agents comment in your last post is partially correct. West is good in the evening - but South facing gardens get the sun for most of the day.

If you have a sitting area in the garden it would be best to put it where it is in sun most of the day but just far enough from the house so that it catches the evening sun from the West. So you put it on the East side of the garden and it won't be in shadow from what appears to be a tall hedge on the West side.

If you put up a summerhouse you should have it on the East side with window to the South and West.

Dish pointer is very accurate, this is my house ive created a few shadows by building a large summer house and a 6/9ft fence, but I get sun on certain parts all day, I will be introducing two patios one shaded one in the sun.

Your estate agent was correct West facing gardens do have advantages . Ours is West facing and we get the sun until late in the day . This is perfect for us as we like sitting out in the evening :blue thumb:

My living room window is south west, my bedroom is west.

I wouldn't have my bedroom anywhere else as it's where I start all my cuttings off.
