I've now installed the front garden picket fence and gate - not a bad effort for a first go and by someone who has no previous experience of fencing. Yes, it did take me 6 months to complete - but I'm blaming the poor weather .

We're going down the traditional white picket fence look - so have been trawling the net for suitable paints.

Any one recommend or not any particular paint brand?

If your after a paint type wood protector then the garden shades stuff is quite good but surprisingly I’ve found b and q own brand paint type a bit better and cheaper. Whatever you do if your going to do 2 /3 coats make sure you do them a few hours apart as the sealed type Finnish won’t allow you to do more coats when fully dry.

I've used Cuprinol on the shed, coldframe, flowerbed borders and now a planter, and don't have any complaints so far. Wilkinsons often have it cheaper/on offer.

            I use Cuprinol Shades.
I usually buy the colours, I think I need, when Wilko has an end of season sale.

I bought Wilko own make version of Cuprinol Shades once and it was nowhere as good.

Thanks for the info :dbgrtmb: everyone.

Some good tips and some brands I've never heard of - so I'll do some more googling.

Just need a spell of dry weather :spinning: to crack on.

I bought some paint cheap from Homebase Clearance. I think it was cuprinol. It rained the day after I bought it and hasn't stopped since. I want to test it so that I can buy some more before they sell out of it, if they haven't done so already.

Another one for Cuprinol Shades. If you're looking for coloured paint, the Cuprinol website has a lot more colours available than you can buy off the shelf.

Although even then, the colour may not be perfect for what you want. In that case, Cuprinol also do cheap tester pots for all the colours, so it's easy to figure out your perfect mix. I wanted a sky blue for my shed which turned out to be a 50:50 mix of two other shades of blue.

And as other people have said, it needs two coats. If you only put a single coat on, it won't last.

Thanks Graham B - after much humming and hawing, I ended up in B&Q shaking the sampler tins to see which was the most paint like.

Some were the consistency of water - whilst the Ronseal Garden Paint gave a satisfying 'glug' when the tin was shaken. I needed something thicker as the paint was going onto rough sawn timber.

I found it quite difficult to find a white paint as well.

Mr Bevans/Rightway were the cheapest shop for a 2.5 litre tin.

Any way, just finished painting the picket fencing this morning - it looks quite presentable from a distance :spinning:.

It doesn't want to be too thick for garden wood. You need the first coat to soak into the top layer of wood, otherwise it won't protect it. The challenge for the paint people is getting that consistency whilst also getting enough pigment to paint the wood. That's where a lot of the cheap stuff sucks.

Glad your fence is looking good!
