I have vastly increased my veg patch (yes bonkers I know). Consequently I have been sowing a lot more seeds and didn't have enough ready of my own compost or leaf mould so went out and bought 2 x125 ltrs of multi purpose compost (Verve as per recommended by GC members and pleased with it). With the very warm weather we have been having for about 3 weeks some of my compost is now ready and I haven't finished the bought stuff. Will it keep ok as quite handy to have compost bagged or would I be best to use the Verve up before I start on my own? It's been so long since I bought compost I can't remember if it "goes off" if you keep it till the following season altho I don't see why it should matter.

If you're only using it for outside Silu I don't see storing it until next year would be a problem. If you intended using it for plants or sowing next year there may be a chance that the nutrients aren't as strong as they were initially. :)

Thanks for the info Sheal. Not sure if the bought stuff is more nutritious atm than my home grown stuff or not. Too early for me to tell. Certainly the bought stuff has a lot less weed seedlings:mute: as often my compost doesn't heat enough but that apart it has served me well for years. I never put weeds on my compost mountains (describes better than heaps!) but still seem to get plenty of unwanted seedlings appearing......the mysteries of gardening!

If you have the space to keep it in the bags I think it is useful to have some bagged compost especially if you need to fill pots or put it in small areas or between plants. Otherwise, why not add it to your own and mix it all in?
