I keep finding small white grubs in the soil in my flowerbeds, and occasionally in my pots.
Does anybody know what these are? I would like to know if they're friend or foe.

They're about a centimetre long, creamy white with an orange head. I'll add a picture I took, but it's not particularly clear.

You have the dreaded vine weevil. Only good thing about them is that blackbirds and robins love them and they are my secret ingredient to encourage a wild bird to take food from your hand.

There is also a larger 'cousin' - chafer grub has an orange head also but has legs as well.

If you do a search there are various threads but RHS Advice: Vine Weevil will give some background

as will RHS Advice: Chafer Grub

Provado is the chemical weapon of choice against Vine Weevil but for Chafer Grub you need to investigate the use of parasitic neamatodes

There are nematodes available for vine weevil grubs too from the same source. Provado is good in pots, but there is some concern that the chemical involved travels up the plant and enters the pollen rendering it poisonous to bees! Vine weevil grubs do not do as much damage in the garden as they do in pots. They tend to eat in straight lines unless forced to go round as in a pot.

Thanks Palustris, I wasn't aware of the possible bee/pollen issue with Provado.
