Thanks Rosa and Gogs and Marley. What a beautiful creature

I think there was a news report last year sometime of something like this I think but I am not quiet sure and people were trying to track the animal down to kill it but others were trying to stop it being done as they are such a rarity.I just wish I could remember what and where it was,but it was definetly on the news

Try getting to it from here Rosa...

The stag has been observed by Fran Lockhart since last year

A rare white stag has been observed on the west coast of the Highlands.
The animal has been seen with other red deer by a member of the John Muir Trust, which has kept its location a secret to protect it from poachers.

The killing of a white stag on the Devon and Cornwall border last year sparked outrage.

Fran Lockhart, partnership manager for the trust, caught the young Highland deer on camera. She described it as "ghost-like".

She said: "I am thrilled to know that there is a white stag roaming free out there in the Scottish Highlands and that I was privileged enough to be able to spend an hour observing him.

"We will be watching this animal with interest, particularly as he will be reaching his full potential in the next couple of years."

The trust said white deer were potent figures in the mythology of many cultures.

Celts considered them to be messengers from the otherworld.

They are closely identified with unicorns and their appearance is said to herald some profound change in the lives of those who encounter them.

White deer are often mistakenly thought to be albinos.

The trust said their unusual appearance was caused by leucism, a rare genetic pattern that causes a reduction in the pigment in the animal's hair and skin.

Unlike albinos who characteristically have red eyes, deer with leucism have normal colouring in their eyes.

The stag killed in England last year was found headless after being shot by a poacher.

Farmers and gamekeepers had kept quiet about the stag's whereabouts for years in an attempt to protect him.

(Kandy maybe that was the one you mentioned.)

Hi Gogs, very interesting article. [IMG] Yes that was the one that got killed last year.I was begining to think I had dreamt it.I know there was an outrage because they are so rare.I think that conservationists were hoping to capture it live so that they could breed with it and hopefully soem of the white genes would eventually come out. Some idiot always has to go and destroy a thing of beauty :(

There have been a few in the West Country over the decades but as you said the last known one was killed recently  but there are unconfirmed reports of young one.
They are known as Harts ie as in the pub name White Hart.
It must be a sight to see but the Highlands a bit too far for me. :D

I have seen two white Doe's in two separate herds
in fields near where I live during the last couple of months.

There are some largish (15 - 20) herds around, I was talking to a Farmer last weeks who said he culls them because the herds are getting too large but Farmers on adjacent land do not do so.

They are fantastic to see but I never seem to have my camera with me when I do see them, also Kira chases them so they dissapear into the wooded areas to get away very quickly.
