These white tiger cubs were born in Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo on October 4th 2008. They were given the Indian names Kali (boy) and Durga (girl). They have bright blue eyes, pink noses and chocolaty brown stripes.

White tigers originate from Bengal tigers, but they are not albino or a seperate subspecies. They are born to tigers that carry the unusual gene needed for the unique coloring. The Bengal tiger is native to the jungles of India.

I simply hate Zoos, and captivity for such lovely creatures.

    Thank you Rosa.

Redstar, many animals would be extinct in the wild due to mans greed of land and pleasure in killing for the sake of killing, as has happened umpteen times in the past. Here in Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo, one of the very best zoos, BTW, they have the chance to live and breed.

This zoo has been named the #1 zoo in the U.S. by Child Magazine. It enables children to see creatures they would otherwise never have had the chance to see, but also learning about the different habits, habitats and also the danger so many animals are in, due to us, the so-called "Superior Species". Perhaps this might be the saving of some "lesser species", the children that are now growing up being more alert to such things than the now generations. We can only hope so.

If you mean zoos of the old sort where animals were put into cages they could hardly turn around in, then I agree with you. Lowry Park Zoo is the complete opposite and the animals are all well-cared for in excellent surroundings, not to forget there are vets to see that they stay healthy, but also to help them leave this world if nothing more is to be done for them, without pain and long-suffering.

Oh, Kedi, I knew you'd pull the extinct card, and I acknowledge that. But you did list all the other things that humans do horrid to animals, greed of land, pleasure of killing. And I know we could list other things horrid humans do to domestic animals., such as puppy mills, declawing cats. If humans gave respect to the animals of the world we would not need zoos. But we can't expect that, humans can't even respect each other much. Look at the American Indians, the African peoples years ago, being of a different religion. We could point to education, well yeah, dah.
Back to zoos, yes most are not run well, I don't know the inspections they go through.
But, in general I hate zoos, the cages, the smell, the animal does not want to live like that.
And you know what, if they go extinct through natural process so be it, they are happier.
I also don't like aquariums, for the large water species, dolphins and larger.
Just leave them out in the ocean.
I know nothing will change. Humans will continue to exploit the world for their own selfish needs.
I do have a poor image of humans don't I. But it is so. Sometimes I am ashamed of my breed.

We are about to go out so I'll just copy this -

"I know nothing will change. Humans will continue to exploit the world for their own selfish needs.
I do have a poor image of humans don't I. But it is so. Sometimes I am ashamed of my breed."

I totally agree with you, also on religion and colour, we are the savages. As you see, I also don't have a good opinion of the human race.

No, you're not alone, ladies. I share your distaste for captivity. However, there are occasions, as Kedi points out, where it is a species' salvation. I am currently hooked on the series "The Lion Man" where Craig Busch devotes all of his life to breeding lions and tigers at his park in New Zealand, including white ones. The white lions are extinct in the wild but he is collaberating with several other wildlife parks to increase the breeding stock with the intention of returning some future animals to the wild but in National Parks where they will be protected and yet be, to all intents and purposes, free and wild.

Gary hand raises his animals so he can handle them and they see him as their 'father' and his relationship with all of them is unique and very special. His first lion, Zion, after which the park was named, was Aslan, the lion in the Narnia film which was shot in New Zealand, of course.

The photos are copyrighted so I've just left the links to them on his website. Enjoy!
