Last year I was given a weigela grown from a cutting in a fairly small pot and I re-potted it into a fairly big pot, hoping I could then leave it in that pot for a good few years. The plant has grown well, probably around 2 feet in height now, and when I moved the pot this afternoon there was a matt of roots growing from the bottom of the pot onto the flags underneath. What are my options?

I could put it in a bigger pot, but I'd rather not if I can help it.

I could plant it in the ground, again, I'd rather not.

Could I just leave it in the pot it's in as long as I water and feed it enough? This is what I'd like to do, but what about the roots growing from the bottom, should I cut them off, just leave them, or something else?

I think a picture would help.
Not something I have grown but I'm sure someone has tried them in pots.

I have one (not white though) in a small pot and it's been there years. I haven't noticed any roots coming out of the bottom of the pot.
I suppose you could cut the roots off, I've done that with other plants and it hasn't affected them. I should think as long as it has good compost it would survive. Maybe you could repot it with fresh compost.
These are only my thoughts. Someone else may know better

Taken this morning. You can see the roots at the bottom.

My personal thoughts are that it needs more space for the roots the pot isn't that big really.

If you feed it well and make sure it doesn't dry out it may flower really well with the root restriction, but it cant go on in a pot that size indefinitely.

If you stand it on pot feet, you'll find the roots tend not to venture out into the open. Sat on the floor, they follow the moisture

Looking at your pot l suspect that another seasons top growth would cause the pot to topple over , as the base of the pot is extremely narrow ( or seems to be from the photo ! ).
Re potting into a similar top diameter pot with straight side would improve chances

I think I will pot it on into a bigger pot this spring. I might even see if I can find a space in the ground somewhere, but that might be a bit like trying to find a hospital bed atm.

I really do need to stop buying more plants or accepting gifts from people.
