    Spit hoods

Do you think they are "cruel and degrading"?
Or, "should be available as standard"?

    Interesting!

We wear them all the time when in GC the Admin Office, "M", but they're very awkward when trying to drink mug of tea and chomping on the Hobnobs.:dunno::doh:

Unfortunately I think should be available, having been spat in the face by an irate punter.

You see? That is why you need a woman's logic ;) snip a little hole in the mesh so you can slip a straw through (or a few hobnob crumbs, depending on your preferences :heehee: )

I was putting it in the context of the police force, but can think of several other situations where they would be useful, hospitals and other public services.

            Interesting point!
Yes, it is in the context of the Police Service and I can see why you would be thinking more out side of the box by including other public services. Seems even the news report didn't take that aspect into consideration.

We can't use the straws as Ziggy cleans his ears out with them and then uses them as a Pea Shooter at the Office Cat. I can't see the point of Spit Hoods anyway, as when you spit it comes back on you and dribbles down your chin??:dunno::snorky:..........I can't see the logic in that:doh:

Yes use them, but saying that if some one splits at a PC then he/she is in more trouble (asalting a PC)

If they want to behave like animals then they should be treated like animals (no harm to animals)

The police should be allowed to use them at their discretion.

If your trying to deal with someone who keeps spitting or is likely to, its the only way.

personally I'd probably just use a large mallet around the nose area if someone spat at me.

Definitely should be available to the police and any other public 'servants'. If the perpetrators are already in custody, then it's because their behaviour has put them outside the law. If they can't or won't behave in a civilised manner, why should the folks on the receiving end not have a means of protecting themselves? Like Jiffy wrote, re. animals.....if it was an aggressive dog, you'd muzzle it wouldn't you?:dunno:

Correction. If the SUSPECTS are already in custody, then it's USUALLY because there is evidence to SUGGEST that their behaviour has put them outside of the law.

It's a very important distinction. The police should not be automatically trusted. At least some of them are just bullies that never grew up. But regardless, they are police. Not judge and jury.

A lot of totally innocent people get nicked. Sometimes it probably looks like they did whatever they're suspected of. Other times the coppers, I suspect, just want an easy way to increase their arrest tally. I've seen this first hand so many times I could write a lengthy essay on it, but I won't. I'll just give one example.

A brawl broke out in town. I saw it. I was on the other side of the road. there was no way I was getting involved. Besides, someone has already called the coppers.

One lad fancied himself as a bit of a hero. He single handedly tried to nonviolently break it up. His repeated attempts all proved unsuccessful. The coppers arrived. They stood and watched. What happened next was an utter disgrace. Our have a go hero, seeing the coppers just standing there while he was being knocked in all directions by the people he was trying to restrain, shouted something like 'ha way lads, don't just stand there, do your job'. To which a copper replied with purest verbal abuse and threats. Still they did nothing. Eventually the fight died down. Partly because our hero had broke it up, sustaining a few obvious injuries himself for his efforts, but mostly I think because the idiots had run out of energy.

It was at this point when the coppers stepped in to do something. Rather aggressively and some would say violently, they arrested the lad that had tried to stop the fight. Another witness spoke up to the coppers, to point out that they'd nicked the wrong person. so they nicked him too. Two arrested. Case closed. The lads that had been brawling just went on their way.
