I've spent my day working at the rugby ground, as I do on most match days and part of my day is keeping the people coming out of the stadium after the match out of harms way as we try and get buses out of one of the stadium gates and onto the road where they queue to get loaded with passengers before heading off.

We do this by trying to get people to stop (arms out at 90 degree angles to our bodies to make us into hi-visibility T-shapes), and then the buses can turn out in front of us while we hold people up for a minute. There is normally a bit of a rigmarole in getting this to happen, but we get there eventually with a bit of shouting etc.

Anyway, this afternoon, this one particular guy (barrel shaped) apparently thought that he had the god given right to charge through our hi-vis line, and the word STOP being repeatedly shouted at him had no impact on him at all - he bowled into my left arm/shoulder at a fair old rate of knots (and I am not exactly small myself, and had my back to him), and left me with no choice but to stand firm and stop him dead with my arm and shoulder as there was a double decker bearing down on us and if I'd let him carry on we both would have been mincemeat.

He did 'sort of' apologised before rushing off, but the net result of this has left me in agony - I must have twisted my back to stop his motion, and now (despite painkillers) I am aching between my shoulder blades right down the centre of my back and around my rib cage (particularly the right side, which is odd given he contacted my left).

I'm sure I will live, but I am so annoyed at him - he must have seen either us, or the bus moving and yet he ploughed on regardless, and there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that he would have ended up under that bus if I hadn't stopped him - what the hell possesses some people? :gaah:

Was he drunk perhaps? Not that that's an excuse of course.

You'll be hurting on the opposite side to where he made contact because it will have been the muscles on the opposite side that had to do all the work to keep you balanced. Most likely you've pulled a muscle. They aren't really meant to take the force of a barrel shaped man bouncing into you, or at least not until they're properly warmed up and stretched.

Drink brings out the worst in people, even normally good natured rugby spectators.

Next time you'll have to side step and let the idiot try the same thing with a double decker.

He didn't seem drunk, although our encounter was brief. I have osteoarthritis which doesn't help one bit - so I could end up paying for this for a couple of weeks.

It never ceases to amaze me the pure lack of self-preservation that some people have

I.couldn't ever let anyone carry on into the path of a bus though, no matter the injuryi sustain in the process - I've seen the result of bus versus person, and its not pretty

Getting there thanks loli :). Put in a hell of a night last night - pain killers barely touched the pain, so I've been taking it slow today. The only thing that I've done today is to make a pot of curried parsnip soup (to use up some parsnips) - other than that, I've been a right lazy tyke.

I've just had a nice soak in a hot bath which has helped a bit, and will move on to 'alternative' therapy shortly ;)

Sorry to hear about your injury, FC. Let's face it there are some single minded, selfish, brainless people around who don't acknowledge that they have to bear in mind other people are trying to help and protect them and will put that person in danger in blind stupidity.
I think you did the right thing in standing your ground and bracing yourself for the impact and if you hadn't seen him coming and his idiotic intention your injuries could have been worse. I don't think it was a lack of preservation on his part but more like a desire to show that "He" wasn't going to be controlled by any kind of high vis helpers.
Anyway, you might try Cocodamol as a pain killer, if you haven't already, as the ordinary pain killers just don't touch the back pain I get on rare occasions.:snork:

Thanks Armandii - I have prescribed pain relief that is quite strong and usually helps, but not last night; thankfully, being lazy and staying warm today seems to have helped a lot, and hopefully a couple of wee drams this evening will relax the muscles a bit :)

                    ((gentle get well squeezes))

Ouch!! Do you have any "Deep Heat"? :dunno:

Failing that, do you have a sock which is 100% cotton?
If you do have a cotton sock, fill the foot end with some rice (doesn't matter so long as it is dry: basmati, jasmine, long grain, brown .... ? ), then, if you have it, spritz it with some lavender oil; don't wet it, just spritz it. Heat in the microwave for 30 seconds - 1 minute ... it should be pleasantly warm but not scorching hot. Lay it across where the deepest pain radiates from and let the warmth/heat do it's job. (The lavender is merely to make it smell nice and emit a 'relaxing' scent).

I would also suggest, if it is no better by tomorrow, do please go and see your Dr! Being bumped by a barrel shaped male and being jarred by it could have nasty consequences for your spine and you need to eliminate that from your potential diagnosis!

Hope you find some relief very soon, FC

A nice B and coke, a soak in a nice bath of Radox type foo foo and a chat with the dog. He'll listen for hours and sigh from time to time - in all the right places. And give us an hour by hour medical report FC.

If there's a lot of pain persisting for more than a couple of hours after the event, I'd been going to the nearest NHS walk-in centre or A&E. I don't want to scare monger, but I know a woman who ended up with a ruptured spleen after a collision with a man on a snowboard while on a skiing hol. Granted there will have been much greater speed involved, but the point is collisions with people can, probably in rare cases, result in internal injuries that need to be checked.
