Just crossed my mind, I don't allow a single yellow plant in my garden apart from Daffodils and Dandelions.

I used to like yellow flowers a lot, and remember my grandmother objecting to them apart from early spring delighters, as yellow flowers just "aren't right". Pastels were the thing for her then and are for me now.

Surprisingly, this is apparently quite common. I wonder why?

OK, many wild flowers are yellow so perhaps avoiding the colour is a bit posh in gardening sense, showing that your garden only has "selected" or "cultivated" plants.

Then again, yellow as a colour in the west has some old associations, such as Judas's cape and yellow roses meaning jealousy in Victorian flower language.

It feels somewhat arbitrary that a single colour can be a put off when we are talking about such lovely things as flowers.

My garden is full of yellow flowers. I find them so cheering.

I'm not fond of the colour yellow, I find it rather sickly. My late partner loved it.
I don't mind pale yellow, like primroses, but most flowers here are blue, mauve, and pink.

        Hate 'em!
Everything this time of year is that cheery insipid yellow colour.
I prefer hot colours of red and orange

I love yellow flowers. I love orange more. But best of all is when you get red, orange, yellow together, with a tiny bit of vibrant pinks and purples. It sort of looks like fire.

Sadly I rarely achieve that look, because I keep my back garden as what I call a townie's idea of natural, so mostly green.

I'm not sure why people might not favour yellow, unless it's just because everyone gets bored of yellow because councils are so obsessed with their standard council issue daffodils that appear in public verges everywhere. I mean, they're lovely and all, but they all look the same.

Had a few yellow flowers over the years and have to admit I really like them.

My Nana would have loved to have been called an arty farty type, :loll: she was born 1914 but already had the firm conception that yellow flowers in the garden were not desirable

Its common in garden designs to avoid yellow , it more difficult to plant up with planting partners. It can be harsh colour to some and a bit in your face and I'd assume it distracts the eye on a design because it probably the colour you notice first and keeps drawing the eye . But I like but not in spring but that's only because they is plenty of yellow with daffodils.

My own favourite colours in the garden is Orange I always seem to by plants in shades of orange / apricot or salmon. Also Magenta and true Blue and purple mainly hot vibrant colours. I not a fan of soft pinks and other soft colours but i still do have them in the garden.

Years and years ago, before I was even properly into gardening, we lived at a house where every spring this awful gangly shrub in the corner of the back garden produced masses of sickeningly bright yellow small flowers. I dug it up!! I didn't know back then, but I do now, that it was, of course a Forsythia.

I've also done similar with a hypericum in a later garden, and I also hate daffodils! So yellow isn't particularly my cup of tea either, lol.

It's not something I'm aware of. Yellow flowers on Cannas are a particular favourite of mine along with yellow dahlias and big blousy double begonias, all flower late into the year. I think it goes well with reds, but surely all down to personal taste.

I've never heard of it being a general dislike. We have lots of yellow flowering plants.
Here are a few but we have lots more :) (Not to mention the yellow smilies  :heehee:)

We also have all the other colours as well. I would also say that the yellow flowers of Phlomis russeliana are the bees' second most favourite flower (after Veronicastrum) so we have hundreds of Phlomis around the garden and the buzzing of very happy bees is a joy.

I've never been a fan of yellow flowers although I do have a border based on yellow/variegated foliage which is the best looking bit of the garden through the winter. What I really can't stand are yellow daisies!
Most borders end up blue/pink/purple/crimson/silver
Every other year my garden is surrounded by fields of sunflowers which are just about bearable for the week or so that they're bright yellow. Then they stand there going ripe, black and sooo ugly  It's wheat year this year :hapfeet:
