Why have ALL our wallflowers died?

Mrs Lao has just informed me that out of fifty wallflowers, only ONE has survived the winter.

How can that be? I asked. She replied Well, we’ve had a tough winter. Well, actually, we haven’t; there’s been some frost in London, but nothing below -3°; in the past, we used to get -6°on a regular basis and for long periods.

Have wallflowers become more fragile? Have any of you experienced the same thing this year?

 

Check the roots, wallflowers belong to the brassica family and are susceptible to club root.

 

How did you source the wallflower plants.? I have seen very lush plants in the garden centre, which are likely grown in warm houses. I feel these are unlikely to enjoy being thrust out into the December conditions we endured.They are at risk of desiccation if wind/cold conditions prevail, before they are established. Traditionally grown at home and transplanted sameday when bedding stripped out. This year many beds continued to November/Dec before winter planting.

 

They were bought from a reputable Internet provider (we have used them for many years - their products are good, although the post often causes damages) as "garden ready" and subsequently planted over a period of about two weeks.
