I've got a so called "Virgin super hub"
Its situated upstairs at the front of the house, that is where I had my original PC, so the cables are entering the house at that point.

I get reasonable reception downstairs at the front of the house but its very iffy out the back and non existent in the conservatory.
I seem to pick up better signals, from I assume the neighbours, which obviously I cant connect to, but I wonder why their signals are stronger than mine.

I see you can buy boosters, but are they any good?

Virgin Super Hubs are utter rubbish to be honest - treat yourself to a good quality router (DLink or Netgear maybe) attach it to your hub with an Ethernet cable and put the Not-So-Super hub into modem mode

            Ma
Maybe I should try to have a word with Virgin about it, if I can get past that annoying woman that answers all the calls and says she wants to help.
Afterall, I'm paying them good money.

Save yourself the heartache @pete - they won't admit that the hubs are tripe, and the best you would get out of them would be another hub in the post, or an 'engineer' (read delivery man with a screwdriver) who will tell you that there is 'nothing wrong Guv'

Being serious for once, take FC's advice and use an ethernet cable, unless you can hack the neighbours

When we got out Super Hub it was installed by a Virgin super geek, he really knew his stuff and was prepared to sit down with us and explain everything very clearly. If you can get past the call centre erks I have nothing but praise for Virgin, they are a vast improvement on the previous bunch that ran our cable network (NTL).

We have our Super Hub set up to use the dual frequency bands, essentially it means there are two WiFi networks in the house and if one is giving a low signal then just connect to the other. I don't know why the signals vary but they do seem to be affected by other gadgets, e.g. we have an Internet Radio that loses connection if it is too near the microwave.

Hopefully this will explain it a bit better than I can

I used to have a lot more faith in Virgin, but the move to this house changed that - don't get me wrong, we are still with them and they are still leagues ahead of NT-Hell, or even Sky for that matter

Ironically, it's the dual band technology that seems to cause the problems with the hubs - particularly in areas/streets that are quite crammed in terms of Wi-Fi - they end up just jumping around and never settling to be able to be used.

We have a signal booster in our back garden. Well it's in my shed and my shed was wired up to the mains (finally) so we could get internet in the garden. It works fine. Considering our garden is well over 100ft long I can get a clear signal all the way from the bottom of it.

I had a conversation recently with a friend of mine who said that you should ideally have your hub at the highest position in your house as possible as the hub broadcasts in a bubble rather than a straight line. Our one is mounted in the loft (converted), so is in the center of the house. Our signal strength is good throughout the house as a result.

If you can try putting it in the loft.

We are also on Virgin , my super hub is in the front of the house upstairs. We do get quite good reception in the back garden , but I suppose this depends on many variables . I would try JW's set up instructions for dual band and see how that goes.
