Just wondering if you are hedgerow picking or when you expect to in your area? I missed it last year somehow so got my beady eye on potential sites here and about. Currently they look a week or two off perhaps? I've heard a bumper crop is expected this year.

    Cheers

I saw some people picking this evening. Fabulous banks of still-green fruit in many places, looking very promising.

Got a bit to go yet up here. I found loads and loads down the dunes a week or so ago when I went out on a photo expedition for @Jenny namaste . Nobody really goes to that bit so I might take the big lad soon and collect a load.

Think i've mentioned this before but when me and @Radio Rolo (wait till Jamesy & Issac pic there screen names on here:biggrin:) were out picking, 2 Bangladeshi guys came up to the same bush, in a huge field, and started picking next to us.

They didn't acknowledge us and just carried on chatting between themselves. When their hands were full they just came over & gave us all the berries they had picked.

Says a lot about their culture:dbgrtmb:

The blackberries are still small here and could do with some rain to help swell them. I pick, wash, dry and freeze in 8 oz sandwich bags and pop 'em in the freezer ready for Bramley Apple and Blackberry crumble during the Winter.
they come back from frozen as though they had just been picked,
      Jenny

Have you tried open freezing them Jen? Spread them out on a tray to freeze them before putting them in bags, they don't all stick together then.

The local blackberries are 2 - 3 weeks late so I'm not picking them by the bucket full as is usual for this time of year and they're also smaller.

We went out for a bit of blackberry picking and were slightly surprised to see nearly half of the blackberries were still green, about 35-40% were turning red, and only about 10-15% of them were getting ripe or ripe.

Another 2 Weeeks Before These are Ripe!

This made a 20 minutes job into an hour one, but we managed to get enough to turn them into a summer pudding...

image.jpg Going to have it with Greek style yogurt or ice cream later:)

We go Blackberry picking every year. Usually about the beginning of September, near Nercwys not far from where we live in north Wales.
Last year however, there was not a great amount. We usually get a fair few.
We come across some elderberries too.
