The only thing I have found effective, other than a dog, is one of these sprayers.

Used one for 2-3 years in the back garden and not a trace of a cat, they have learnt to avoid the area, just wish I could use one to stop them in the front garden , but probably too many protests from passing pedestrians getting a soaking as well :snork:

They are battery operated, but need a mains tap /water supply.

However, you would need to turn the water off when the children are in the garden, as the jet of water would be too strong for such young ones.

What about those cats and dog repellents at pound stores?

A picture of your garden might help, if your garden is fenced and there jumping over something like this in the problem areas will stop them,
Defenderâ„¢ Extra Wide Stainless Steel Pigeon Control Spikes

If you have gaps everywhere its going to be more difficult to stop them,

I've made it very hard for them to get out if they do come in very rare they come now, if I do notice one on cctv I move the satellite dish, that scares the sh&t out of them, realising its hard to get out and this big dish is going to scare the sh&t out of you, they don't come back in a hurry

        Totally agreed with @ricky101.

You can spend a small fortune or waste a lot of time trying a plethora of deterrents that may work for a while but will ultimately fail if repellents get washed away or the curiosity of cats makes them realise things aren't a threat.

They hate being soaked and the noise from the sprayers alone often sends them running before they even get hit. A couple of experiences with these devices will persuade them to mess elsewhere.
