My mother has what I believe to be a wild cherry tree however the leaf is a copper beech colour. All the books say that the leaf is green.
The fruit is now out - in the form of single fruits pretty well spaced out over the tree - ie not very much of it (which is why I think it to be a wild cherry) - however there is no question that the fruit is cherry like - It is deep red, the same colour as the leaf and when opened has a stone in the middle.
Can this be another sort of cherry or do Wild Cherry trees sometimes have this deep red colour?

There are ornamental cherries with copper coloured leaves. They do occasionally produce fruit, though it is reputed to be inedible. Name of one is more difficult to find though.

Charlie, Palustris is right about it being an ornamental cherry. There are 2 with copper/bronze leaves. The first is the " Bird Cherry " Prunus padus colorata, and the second is the " Sargent cherry " Prunus sargentii. I think the one your mother has is probably sargentii. David.

There are a couple of Japanese ornamentals with coppery leaves too.

    [IMG] Charlie,
I think I mighthave the answer. I think it is a manganese or magnesium deficiency. If the tree is in a town garden this could very well be so if it hasn't been fed for a while...
Have a look at my fave site link for this type of problem..

Book mark it it is so handy. [IMG]

Thanks all of you but I'm not sure about those suggestions The Sergent and Bird cheery - The the photos I could find on google didnt really look like it. My mothers tree is very large probably 40 ft and also wide and the leaf is always exactly the same colour as a copper beech. I have to admit that it has been there all of my life - 50 yrs so its age may be a factor. The striking thing is that the leaf never goes green. i think I must take a photo and post it.
There is a possibility that it could be this (thanks to Marley Farley for finding it)http://www.trees-online.co.uk/Product.php?Dept=3&SubDept=71&PKey=516 but even those leafs are too green.
Seriously the colour of the leaf is like this http://www.stepps.info/historic_beech_tree_517_Winter.jpg

Here are my Photos of the mystery tree. Marley has posted something that looks very like it but the fruit looks very much like a cherry and not a plum - Any ideas?

[IMG] As far as I know Charlie, the fruit on these "Thundercloud" trees does look like a plump juicy cherry.. Just as in your photo... [IMG] As does the shape.. [IMG]
