Sorry no wood anemones but will these do? They are a little fuzzy but it was blowing a gale at the time. [IMG]

          Great thread!

I was on holiday in Yorkshire last week, and saw some wood anemonies too:

Plus a few clumps of violets,

Also thrilled to see some cowslips coming through - but didn't have my camera! Neither was it round my neck when also spotted wild strawbs! (tsk!)
This amazing silver birch was growing out of sheer rock (it seemed - though I didn't venture that high!) at the Brinham Rocks - they were amazing - as was the weather, haven't we been lucky?!

Is there a distinction between 'cowslip' and 'primula'?

"Primula" is the scientific name for the family of plants that the cowslip belongs to. It includes primroses, cowslips, oxlips and the garden polyanthus, for example. Cowslip is the common name for one member of that family, "Primula veris". This scientific name identifies it to botanists all over the world so everybody knows which plant you mean.

This avoids the confusion caused by using common names which vary considerably. In this part of France, for instance, cowslips are called "cuckoo flowers" which in England refers to 'Cardamine pratensis' - otherwise known as Lady's Smock!
