Just made an insect hotel today with my daughter.

It started with an old pallet cut up tp make 4 shelves. These were stacked up on bricks.
The bottom layer was filled with brickends etc picked off the plot
Next layer was filled with odd fragments of wood again mostly gleaned of the site.
An upper 'floor' is filled with cut lengths of lovage stems - cut back yesterday
Another is partly filled with closely packed twigs and sticks
We are going to fill another floor with pairs of plant pots pushed together ( top to top ) and packed full of straw.

We still have 2 floors left - any ideas?
Anyone have a similar hotel with lots of residents?

One I made at work last year had ladybirds and lacewings over winter and now has solitary bees laying eggs in holes drilled in blocks of wood

I have no suggestions as to what else you can add, but what an excellent project. It will be interesting for you and your daughter to watch who moves into it.
