Just had to post this to let you know that today I saw an amazing amount of wildlife whilst at work. The count from 7 this morning til 5 this evening was 6 roe deer, 2 foxes (healthy red colour as opposed to pale scrawny town foxes) 1 brown hare, hen harrier, 2 red kites, countless buzzards, 1 sparrowhawk - and about three thousand geese (pink leg). Usually see a lot of wildlife but for a single day, today was exceptional. When I rented a flat in Inverness, the garden was frequented by 2 roe deer, a family of red squirrels and a pine marten. Am sure it has to do with changes in farming practices - leaving snail strips, and beetle banks, putting land into set-aside (left to grow wild for minimum of one year, not being allowed to cut hedges at certain times of the year etc.

There are definitely perks to my job - working outside isone of them - would rather spend winter up to my knees in water, hands like ice, etc so that I can have the summer outside, than spend the year behind a desk - had thirteen years of that near you - gave it all up five years ago !

That sounds quite sublime, SRat. In my flat in Essex I used to regularly see foxes sloping across the grass in fron of my windows at 1 or 2 in the morning. And dragonflies, and hedgehogs, owls, magpies, squirrels by the cartload (grey, of course).
Ah how I miss it all!

Always good to see wildlife. I work opposite the bird sanctuary at Oare in Kent and see many birds.

In the winter a kingfisher roosts on a sluice below a bridge, if I'm very careful I can stare at him from 6 feet away. Slightest movement from me and he's away which is why I haven't got a picture of him yet.
