I have just placed 3 spotlights in the garden hi ghlighting ferns and shrubs. The lights are placed under the plants shining upwards about 18inch away. Will the halogen light cause any damage when the plant is frozen?
The plants are Australian Tree Fern and a Choisa

Jean halogen do give off heat and being that close could cause some damage, stick a thermometer were the lights strike the plants and see what temperature they go up to, these days you can replace the lamps with LED spot lamps there is vitually no heat at all but they are not quite as bright.

    my 2p worth.

Don't worry about the lights. 18 inches away is not a problem.
People have been highlighting plants for years with lights with no problems.
As for changing them to led lamps don't bother.
They will cost you an "arm and a leg" in comparison to the halogen lamps, and not all light fittings will accept led lights and still be weather proof.
Also depending on the transformer* led lights may not work, some "transformers" have a minimum load in order to work

    * This is usually electronic transformers

The only thing you should really be worried about is the mains supply to the transformer, it should be suitably protected from mechanical damage.

Installing a mains supply in a garden comes under building regulation part P

Jean, I agree with water-garden, the lights shouldn`t prove a problem. Enjoy your plants however and whenever you can.
