Has anyone tried using live willow for screening? I'd be interested to know how difficult it is and if it could be used in hedgerows to thicken them up.

We've made a willow tunnel at school which was very effective. Willow roots very easily which is why it is popular in primary schools, quick results. I don't know about putting them in hedges though, I think either Alan Titchmarsh or Geoff Hamilton once made a fence by weaving willow wands. They are very supple which makes them easy to bend in the direction you want them to grow.

Willow fedges are available commercially though I forget where. Web search should do the trick. Beware with willow the magnificent number of debilitating diseases that they fall prey to. As far as I understand stress is one major determinant of the onset of these diseases so using them for thickening up a hedge might not be a great idea unless yuo want to make the hedge wider..
