I have a halls 8x10 greenhouse and where I live near lake vernwy in powys for the second time have lost pains of glass this last one was Doris that caused the trouble , when it first happened I lost 4 pains and contacted the makers and they said to add extra glazing clips which held until Doris. But when she hit lost 6 more 3 from roof and 3 from the back. I was thinking of replacing the glass with poly carbonate about using self tapping screws to fix to the frame any comments please next stage would be scrap the greenhouse ??

Sorry to hear that Stu

You could silicone the glass in, that would make it really rigid.

I lost 3 panes of glass, 3 fence panels, kids sand pit and Wendy house ended up about 10 foot from where it should be, however I did gain a dustbin :rasp:

I have a couple of pieces of polycarbonate in my greenhouse on the side nearest shed, I have silicones to the frame and used fixing clips. They are situated next to where I lost 2 panes and have not budged.

Doris broke a few poles in our patio gazebo, we've had it for about 15 years, replaced the cover 3 times and the poles twice.

I had problems with a storm a couple of years ago, lost about 5 polycarbonate panels. I ended up using tile battening on the outside fixed between the aluminium struts, top bottom and middle. I then screwed the polycarbonate from the inside using rubber washers. Been through a number of very windy winters and never lost any panels since. See image attached, all the best.

I left my Green House door, which faces West, open along with the three roof vents and the Louvre on the East side of the Green House. Doing that seemed to ease the air pressure inside the Green House somewhat and maybe helped in suffering no damage to it.:dunno::snorky:

I've got a Halls greenhouse on my allotment, I'd always keep it closed down in high winds.
Last thing you want is the wind inside, the design is made to take wind pressure from the outside and not the inside.

So I have been known to take the tubes out of the auto openers and tie the vents down when high winds are forecast, and also make sure the door is bolted to avoid it getting opened by the wind.

I guess there are different approaches to wind damage, pete. I find that the wind pressures goes through the Green House apertures rather than letting the air pressure leak into the closed, shut down, Green House and raise the pressure inside the house which could blow the windows out as it's got nowhere to go............but different strokes for different folks:dunno::heehee:

Yep I agree it can work if you open the thing up fully so that the pressure is released , but I tend not to want my greenhouse becoming a wind tunnel.

So by keeping the whole thing closed the pressure cant get inside.

My Halls greenhouse withstood close to a force ten storm with the loss of one pane of glass. The greenhouse is bolted down and has toughened glass in it which is a lot heavier than horticultural glass. To be honest I don't think poly-carbonate would have stood a chance because of it's lightness and the chance that the aluminium frame would twist in such high winds.

Safety glass, toughened glass, the same thing of course Armandii. :) The same glass that is used for car windscreens and shatters into small granular type pieces and not shards on impact.

My Palram houses use polycarbonate panels and have withstood lots of wind, hail etc. I believe the highest wind so far was jusf under 100kilometers per hour.

I like glass but I bought my first Palram because of the price and becaudse I was pleased with it's strength am now just finished setting up number 3.

Someone mentioned twisting aluminum. Nope. Not a chance with mine. :)

I found that out, Sheal, when constructing the Green House. My friend who was helping me handed one of the side panes to me and I gripped it at the edge which put to much pressure on that area.........the pane just disappeared into a cloud of "sugar" granules:hate-shocked::doh::gaah: I got a new pane the same day but had to travel to the fringes of Stoke to get it and, then after cleaning up the pile of crumbled glass, spent years finding granules in the soil:dunno::snorky:
