Wind Turbines, are they a blot on the landscape ?.
Is it the way we must go for the future ?.
Do you have any near your home ? if so what problems,if any ,do you have ?.
Do you think they are economical?.

In Scotland we see more and more wind turbines being erected.
I passed through the Stirlingshire area last week and noticed one built very close to a housing estate,it was HUGE. I would not want one near my home.

I also have been told they make a bit of a noise, when the winds are strong, which we get a lot up here.

What are your views on these Wind Turbines ?

It's probably quite a complex issue. Personally, I don't mind the look of them, indeed, I wouldn't be bothered if they erected some around here. IF they are less polluting than 'normal' sources of energy, I really don't see the problem.

    Cheers...Freddy

I have mixed feelings about them.

Just off shore here, they are building a wind farm. Its too close to the shore for my liking, but I guess its not so bad. Wind farms should be off shore, but then if they are, then why not plough more engineering into tidal power. There's no shortage of that just waiting to be harnessed.

Two more wind farms are proposed within 5 miles of us. Both in beautiful countryside between towns. If they both go ahead it will mean we have all the heavy industry around the Tees as we've always had, plus a wind farm when we look out to see (only a mile out, far too close), or if we leave the towns of Redcar, Marske or Saltburn there'll be more, to pass through, and if we head up to the local hills to see the unspoilt view over countryside to the sea, we'll just see more turbines.

And for what? All the scientists openly acknowledge that wind farms can't possibly put a dent in our energy demands. The only practical option is to massive reduce our energy demands. That doesn't mean we have to give all our stuff to charity then go and live in the woods. Most stuff we take for granted uses far more power than it needs too. The laptop I'm writing this on has a dual core CPU whizzing along at 1.6ghz when given the processing demands of using a web browser one core should be switched off completely and the other should be running at a few mhz, but that would require the hardware manufacture to spend a few more pence per unit on the power management chips. Google once famously announced plans to move their data centres to Norway so they cold save money by using less energy on cooling. I don't know if they actually did it. This is stuff that the consumer shouldn't need to care about but the manufacturers should be sorting. So if the manufacturers can get energy demand down by 50% and then if consumers try to match that, then consumer energy consumption would drop by 75%, all without filling the landscape with great metal towers.

If your computer ran at a "few mhz" you would use more energy than you do now, at that speed you would boil the kettle a few times (to make tea) waiting for your computer to do something.

Oh, as for wind turbines, I have nothing against them, I do like this one though

Tidal power would make more sense, like other Dave says:dbgrtmb: We used to have lots of tide powered mills, think there may be one or two still working.

Don't know why the government think that huge is good when many more smaller sources could add up to the same output, and create more jobs with servicing them.

Think about how many small turbines you could fit on a river from its source to the sea.

Going back to the original question, I don't mind them, not got a big one near me but have worked close to 3 of them. I'd rather see those than a nuclear power station, but I think they are an OTT response to the need for renewables, big & expensive to produce, not terribly efficient & would make hell of a mess if they were to tree up.

Wind farms are just that, lots of wind from politicians trying to look GREEN.

          Expensive, unreliable and look awful.
But you can bet someone is making a killing out of building them.
