I've got 8.1 and not entirely sure if this will answer your question. Did you know that if you just type anything on the start screen (the main metro style screen with all the apps) it searches for a matching app or setting or help? So type 'charms' and you should get the search result 'Navigation properties' - click on that and you should get:

      Capture.JPG

      Uncheck that top option.

Hope that's what you are asking for Jules. Personally I work in the Desktop view all the time and rarely venture into the Win 8 features, that's because I'm on a normal desktop PC without a touch screen.

I'm no expert on windows so I'm not entirely surprised your's is different. There always seems to be several ways to do the same thing so I'll see if I can enable the swipe right to left.

I was thinking of buying a new PC.
This has put me right off.
Can anyone explain what the hell a Charm bar is, or a Swipe, I might need to know one day.

I've got windows 8.1 on my laptop with no touchscreen either. The charms bar only appears when I put my cursor in the very bottom of the right hand corner. Worse for me is that other menu (not sure what it's called!) that comes up at the bottom of the screen with the start menu and customer support etc. It's supposed to disappear when you move the cursor off it unless you click on it, but mine sometimes gets stuck there and the only way to get rid of it seems to be to reboot. I hate windows 8.1!!!!

It's all the new, latest features from Microsoft and you'll need to install their updates to disable all their new features that don't work as well as their old stuff did.

Hi pete, dont be put off windows 8 is ok it just needs some getting used to..The charm bar as they call it is a strip bar with options for settings, start, share, search & devices that pops out of the right hand side of the screen, you can get it to show up by placing your curser in the top rt hand corner of the screen but also if you swipe the cursor from rt to left too fast then that makes it appear..which is annoying x

          Ok, thanks.
Yes it sounds very annoying, I've been about 8 yrs getting my head around XP, I'm getting older, the last thing I need is to start it all over again.
