I made a planter for my mums decking balcony but it really doesn't get much sun, especially over the winter. Anyone got any suggestions as to what I should plant?

The compost is 5 inches deep and 6 inches wide.

I really would like to change to summer bedding next May, so, only really need a bit of colour that will survive in shade. 119601197_944514619358344_6662601549842822352_n.jpg 119667872_245446233446734_3073885578329306526_n.jpg

For the winter I'd put violas in that very nice long planter.
(A few cyclamen would do well in full shade)
In the summer I'd put in impatiens for a riot of colour that can handle semi shade.

I know it may be considered necromancy, but I would love to see how it turned out. For me, this (well-made) setup looks perfect for some kitchen herbs.

I'll take some pictures and get back to you maybe later today or possibly tomorrow.

For winter/early spring you could try the smaller bulbs, Snowdrops, Crocus and Tete A Tete Daffodils.

For summer Nemesia will cope with part shade and always put on a good display.

            Pictures taken this morning.

Looks really nice, I think, considering I thought they were all dead a few weeks ago in the hard frost.

These winter bedding plants still look stunning, when should I be considering removing them and planting summer bedding?

If you are using plants in preference to growing from seed, and bearing in mind the current chilly weather, I wouldn't replace them before the end of May.

And does this look like a decent choice for the mostly shaded bedding trough? Screenshot 2021-05-13 210541.png

Million bells would prefer full sun but should be okay in semi shade. The Begonias and Busy Lizzies will be fine. :)
