Why have my cabbages grown into trees? The stalk is about 12" long and a lot of them have fallen over with the weight at the top.

Could be a light problem, shady areas do tend to cause many plants to get "leggy". Failing that, possibly a defficiency in pottasium or nitrogen (or both) which they love and can be found in good old well rotted manure. What variety are they - not sprouts that have grown blind per chance??

Thanks for the reply. No they are not sprouts just Savoy cabbage. They have plenty of light(in the middle of the garden) and plenty of manure and home made compost before planting so I'm still at a loss

Its a long time since I've grown cabbages but just a thought, were they sown too early.
I believe savoys being winter cabbage should not be sown too early in the year.

The mild weather for most of the winter wouldn't help either.
