Winter flowers

    I'm looking for some ideas for tall slim evergreen plants and'or winter flowering ones if anyone has any ideas, something I can get cheap and from any garden centre would be helpful! They'll be for a west facing and a south facing wall. Any ideas appreciated!

    What about a good old Virginia Creeper? That will cover a wall quickly and will be a lovely deep red from Autumn.

    [​IMG] What about a forsythia, beautiful yellow flowers in spring then lovely green leaves. You can keep it trimmed to your desired shape really easy & very cheap to buy. Mahonia,yellow flowers late winter spring time depending where you are, & scented but prckly leaves, grow tall & quite slim. Garrya, Silk tassle bush, very attractive long silky silver catkins. There is of course good old vibernum, lots of different kinds of those. Hope some of these help. [​IMG] :D

    I'd go for ceanothus or Californian lilac. Lovely verdent green all winter, nice and bushy and a beautiful show of blue flowers in spring.

    Thanks people! Don't want ivy again Fran, just had 9 years of it on the house walls and fancy a change big time!!
    Virginia Creeper sounds ace!
    Off to the garden centre tomorrow for a browse, without my credit card!

    I dont think virginia creeper is evergreen, is it? Or winter flowering.

    :( Nope Virginia creeper is not evergreen, the leaves just go a pretty colour before they fall. It is actually very invasive too. I would think carefully before you get that. :(

    Good job I didn't find one then!! :D I got a bamboo. Heavenly Bamboo to be specific, it's gorgeous!

    :D You will be very pleased I'm sure with that, I love the sound the wind makes rustling through bamboo, The only thing I would say about it is the roots will spread so keep an eye on them, The new shoots will tell you where they are. [​IMG] [​IMG]

    Thanks MF, how fast do they grow - cos mine is quite a bushy short specimin about a foot tall at the mo, do I crop it or just pull the new shoots/roots?
