I am planning 2 winter pots for outside my front door. I want to put some ivy in them for colour but I don't want anything too rampant. Can I put in ivy from the house plant section at the garden centre or are these totally different to the outdoor ones? I'm only thinking that these don't appear to grow too big, my pots aren't very wide.

    Hi Celia

I have used the house plant type ivy quite successfully, here in the south east of Scotland, in pots which are not exposed to bitter winds. [IMG]

Ivy is ivy, same as house plants are'nt really house plants there just a bit tender for our climate, but most can be outside on the patio all summer. Just give it a trim if it goes a bit rampant!

    Hi Celia,

There is a lady down the road that has grown a small leaf ivy all over her wall, also it covers a pot. She keeps it neatly trimmed right back and i must say it looks great. Will ask her which type it is and post a pic of it if she doesn't mind [IMG] it almost looks like its been stuck on - it is immaculate and very stunning :D

I'd love to see that photo if you can. My walls are beautiful red sandstone but I'd love a bit of ivy If I could grow it in a pot and keep it under control.
