Winter Window Box

Hello
My partner has expressed an interest in growing herbs in a window box (London living=no garden)so i was thinking of buying him one for christmas. I am a completely ignorant gardener so don't even know if it's a good time of year to plant anything & if so what herbs should I put in it?

A London window box may be OK planted or stocked now, subject to it getting enough sunlight and indeed warmth from the window. What kind of herbs was he thinking of - cullinary, colour or ????
