Hello Golfer - I'm fairly new to veg growing but this is what I shall be doing - I think it depends on what you like to eat though, and whether you are set on growing from seed (or sets) or don't mind buying some baby plants at the garden centre. If someone more experienced comes along i stand to be corrected [IMG]
You could sow now some winter lettuce-type things, also pak choi, mizuna etc. and some types of spinach i think, but I think they need to go in soon (monty don said on gardener's world tonight that winter lettuce needs to go in this week and is best covered with fleece or a cloche when it gets really cold). I think it's too late to sow stuff like brussels, leeks, broccoli or cabbage but you might still be able to get baby plants of these types. I shall be checking up when to plant autumn onion sets and broad beans, although this time I will only put in half my beans in the autumn, to give a prolonged harvest.
    Hope that's some help!

Im in the same boat golfer, not sure on what to grow but i've been consulting some books.

get a garlic bulb (from garden centre not the supermarket as these can harbour diseases) and break it up into individual cloves. Plant these cloves in the ground and they should eventually form a new clove. The process is pretty much the same as growing potatoes.

I've been inspired by some articles to try growing some seeds now even though they are supposed to be sown earlier, im going to give this a try purely as an experiment, I wont be dissapointed if the result is negative!

Others im going to sow are: Broad beans, hardy lettuces, purple sprouting broccoli and maybe try some raddish

Spring onions and winter lettuce sown last week in poly tunnel are showing as is winter spinach sown outside. Broad bean that were cut right down two weeks ago are showing new flowers, but these will be touch and go as far as regards a crop before the first frosts.
