I am looking after a wisteria for the first time. Does anyone know what I should be doing to it now, if anything? There are lots of broad bean-like things hanging from it, looking dead now; should I remove them? I presume it is an old plant as its branches are thick and very tangled.
I learn from a neighbour that it is the variety which only flowers once a year. Thanks for any advice.

Wisteria should be pruned twice a year, including around this time of year. Have a look at this video .

Thank you so much for this, it's very helpful. My wisteria is older, thicker and much more tangled than the ones in the videos, but I saw the broad bean pods, dangerous to dogs, she said, and shall remove those and anything else which looks dead. I think I should untangle as much as I can, as well, leaving 2 to3 buds. There has obviously been no pruning for years, and I know that, if I get it wrong, the worst that can happen would be a year without flowers.
Thanks also for the Charles Causley poem, lovely.
