Looked around but not found a satisfactory answer so thought I'd ask the experts.

I have a very old gnarly wisteria which has been slowly dying for a few years now and I want it out so I can get to grips with really sorting out that part of the garden (much neglected and in need of complete rethink and replanting).
The trunk(s) are huge so thinking I would cut off at the base (have to borrow a chainsaw) dig the earth down around it and then cut off below ground level and fill in. But I'm not sure if it will try to resprout or not? Does anyone know? Is this the easiest solution?

    Thanks
    GG

no idea but surely a roundup stump killer or something would work if you didn't want it to grow back

@Dips you have a point, but I try to avoid chemicals if at all possible, hence the dig and bury option.

When I took mine down a few years ago I just sawed through the trunk just above ground level and it didn't regrow.

If you saw off about 18 inches above the ground you can cut roots with a saw or axe and then wiggle to free from the ground. It shouldn't grow back if you do that :)

@Sheal I was hoping to do it with what is at hand (or borrowable).

@whis4ey that sounds like a good plan, and I have a sharp ax lurking about in a safe place somewhere. I may have to buy a good buck saw which I need for other things anyway.

I killed a large Ivy trunk by smacking a bagful of copper nails into it.
