In the part of London where I live you don't see many examples of this lovely shrub, but there IS one a few blocks away from me in full bloom just now. It's worth a walk just to see it; one glance and I'm dreaming of Miss Marple, Ivor Novello etc.!
I don't think I'm going to attempt to grow one now but if in a few years time, after I'm 60, I move away I shall probably consider doing so.
Does Wisteria grow fairly quickly or will I be too old to care when it finally starts to look good?

Why not grow a standard in a large pot. I was in a nursery yesterday where there were some real beauties in full flower (under glass). And a snip at only £495 each - I would have had a couple if only I hadn't forgotten my wallet! Wisteria from seed can take up to 20 years to flower. But if you get a grafted cutting (I think most places do that now) it should flower within 2 or 3 years.

Once it starts to flower you have something to look forward to, so it doesn't really matter if it takes a while to get really big.

Wisteria is fickle. Some get going straight after transplanting, others take ten years or more. I know one, properly pruned (by yours truly) all across a house that stubbornly refuses more than two or three heads, another I put in a couple of years back as a miserable little twig that manages a decent crop of flowers every spring. Some grow all over the place but are supposed to be less vigorous, others I have tried include one Japanese Wisteria that is so vigorous it has now grown approx 6 inches in 5 years!

Don't wait to put one in. You might be lucky. Remember they are usually a maintenance issue once they get going (frequent pruning)
