    morning all

well i woke up this morning to to my greenhouse been wrecked :(

the wind has blown my door out and snapped the plastic and blown some other windows out too :(

i could cry only had it in september last yr

the funny thing is i went in there yesterday to get something and remember shutting both doors as i always do and no one else ever goes in only me

well this morning one door was wide open with the window snapped all over the garden [IMG]

now theres no way the wind had opened that door as its really stiff and catches on small screws

so how has it opened

i thought that maybe someone had been in there but theres no evidence of anyone been in

does anyone no how to go about getting new perspex windows ? or can they not be replaced ?

well im sitting here [IMG] that 1 this wind bogs off asap and 2 no more windows go ! and 3 how that door was open [IMG]

    I'm so sorry.
I can't help with knowing how to repair it.
But I'm sure someone on here will be able to help.
The wind and rain was really bad here in Sutton Coldfield to.
I thought the roof was coming off the house at one point.
    And the rain.
And yet this morning although a bit windy ,it's lovely.
    Sunny and mild.
I hope you get it sorted.
I must ring my Dad to see if he is O.K.

The door was almost certainly opened by the wind Cattwoman, it is amazing what it can do and it is very powerful.

Is your 'glass' proper perspex or is it just thin polythene? If it is perspex then a glazier's workshop should be able to supply it. What size are the panes and how are they held in? Are they just held with W and Z clips like a metal frame greenhouse. I had 3 panes go last week and just bought 3 more and clipped them in, £14, but I have standard greenhouse glass and strangely enough, although last night was worse for wind, everything is intact this a.m.

Can you post some pictures a) of the general structure and b) close ups of damage, clips, fastenings etc.

    hi folks

this is ny greenhouse or was should i say

    Empire Stores greenhouses

as far as i know the panels just slotted into the frames and then are screwed in or something hubby put it together so im not sure

im still convinced that someone has been in it and with leaving the door open the wind has got inside and blown the panels out

i just can't see how the wind has opened that door as i can barely open it myself

hubby has just seen it and is going to get it sorted [IMG]
he said he knows someone at work who can make new panels so all is not lost

we have had some really bad winds up here and the greenhouse has always been fine which is why i was so shocked this morning

    thanks for your replys folks

Hi cattwoman - so sorry to hear about the greenhouse. However, as long as the frame is not twisted it shouldn't be too difficult to repair.

On a technical point - wind doesn't blow panes of glass (or perspex) out, it sucks them out. Its the same effect, that when air flows over an aircraft wing it sucks it up into the air and allows it to fly. So I suspect the first thing that happenend was that the panels were sucked out, then maybe the frame was flexed in such a way as to make the door open.

Cattwoman, siliconing the panels in is a good idea by your husband and should help no end.

Definately the wind that opened the door, Ive seen a ten foot by eight cedar green house that the wind lifted and moved 1'.

The thing was glazed with 4mm safety glass and quite literally weighed a ton! The force of it being picked up had opened up the frame joints and cracked some of the panes.

Those perspex windows flex something wicked in a stong wind and soon flick out,I fitted a makrolon(an unbreakable plastic)roof on a g/house I had and to prevent them blowing out I drilled through the frame and the overlaps secured them with ss bolts, sealed them with silicone sealer you couldn't blow them out with a scud.

Oh Cattwoman I can imagine your grief and horror upon seeing your poor greenhouse it must have been terrible for you sweetie.

It's great to know your hubbie came to the rescue...bless his little cotton socks!

You most keep us upto date how things go structurally wise with your greenhouse as I'm pretty sure my own hubbie intends to get one of those types but I'm not too keen.

Anyway I'm glad it's fixed for you and I do hope it stays that way.Hel.xxx.

walnut i know what you mean about the flex on the windows good grief i can't belive they all did't go yesterday

Helofadigger don't be put off having one of theses types price wise (i think) they are a very good buy the only thing i would say is use every last screw to secure it my hubby did'nt so thats why it went one one

i found this yesterday looks great and alot easier to put up but would like to see it in these winds though

cattwoman25, sorry to hear about your greenhouse. As has been said, wind is a funny thing (don't we all know [IMG] ). On a much lesser note, our bird table (plastic, but secured) was blown over last week. Its been in the same spot for a couple of years & never moved, & the wind is terrible.
Our coldfame/greenhouse whatever, got ruined cos of the rain, cold, frost then the wind just ripped it. we have managed to get a new cover for the frame but won't put it up yet cos of the constant wind.
Roll on summer - or spring yet! Hope everyone is safe though, plants etc may be important but people are more.
    Cheers
